Crop Insurance Information Sessions Scheduled

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today announced a series of crop insurance information sessions to take place throughout the State beginning on January 13, 2009. The presentations are part of the New York Crop Insurance Education Program that is administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets in cooperation with the USDA Risk Management Agency, Cornell Cooperative Extension, USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) and other partners.

"These sessions are intended to help New York State growers with their risk management planning," the Commissioner said. "Itís important for producers to know that the 2008 Farm Bill changed the eligibility requirements for disaster payments, requiring crops to be enrolled either in crop insurance or FSAís Non-Insured Disaster Assistance Program. Higher levels of crop insurance coverage may increase the guarantees for both crop insurance and disaster protection."

The agendas of the information sessions will vary according to the target audience with most sessions focusing on the crop insurance tools for spring planted crops. There will also be opportunities for vegetable, fruit and diversified growers to learn about risk management options available to them. At most meetings, a representative from FSA, which administers the disaster payment program, will be on hand to discuss new requirements included in the Farm Bill.

The crop insurance information sessions are scheduled in advance of upcoming deadlines for purchasing, renewing or modifying crop insurance coverage. February 2 is the deadline for onions, Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) and AGR-Lite renewals or modifications. March 16 is the deadline for Actual Production History (APH) and Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC) policies covering most spring planted crops and AGR-Lite for first time buyers.

The New York Crop Insurance Education Program is intended to provide the farmers of New York State with practical, timely, up-to-date information on crop insurance.
