Commissioner Encourages NY’ers To Visit County Fairs

54 County and Youth Fairs Scheduled This Summer; First Fairs Open this Week

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today announced that the county fair season has kicked off and encouraged New Yorkers to visit their local county and youth fairs this summer. The first county fairs of the season opened this week in Orange and Oswego Counties.

“County fairs have always presented a unique opportunity for communities to come together and take pride in their many accomplishments,” the Commissioner said. “They also provide a fun learning environment, as well as entertainment for families. Join the millions of people that visit New York’s county fairs every year – it is sure to be an enjoyable experience for all.”

Spanning the duration of summer for the next three months, 54 county and youth fairs will open their gates to millions of people all over New York. Last year, approximately 4 million New Yorkers visited county and youth fairs across the State.

County fairs were originally created to show off the latest developments in agriculture, as well as to provide a social gathering for the community. Today, county fairs continue their agricultural tradition, but also provide a host of other family activities, including entertainment, educational exhibits, carnival rides, and a variety of food. While every fair has its own unique attractions, events such as tractor pulls and demolition derbies have become common to most fairs.

The Commissioner also encouraged all New Yorkers to mark their calendars for the 163rd annual Great New York State Fair. This year’s fair, themed “Summer’s Hottest Ticket,” will open on August 27 and run through September 7. The Fair attracts nearly 1 million people each summer. Annual highlights include the butter sculpture, a daily parade, animal shows, midway rides, incredible food and much more. New this year are major exhibits highlighting New York agriculture, innovation and tourism. There will also be exciting new entertainment ranging from daredevil wakeboard riders and acrobatic dogs to duck racing and a live-animal rainforest experience. During its 12 days of operation, the Fair will host international music stars such as Kenny Chesney, Kelly Clarkson, Kid Rock, Jeff Dunham, The Fray and Big & Rich.

The largest county fair is the Erie County Fair with 908,241 people. The oldest continuously operating fair in America is the Jefferson County Fair, first organized in 1817.
