Commissioner: "It's County Fair Season in New York"

54 County and Youth Fairs Scheduled This Summer; First Fairs Open This Week

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today announced that the county fair season kicks off this week in New York State.  There are 54 county and youth fairs planned across the State with the first two starting this Thursday, July 1st in Orange and Oswego Counties.

“Summer has arrived, which means it’s county fair season in New York,” the Commissioner said.  “We have a fair in nearly every county in the State that showcases our finest youth and agriculture.  Fairs are also known for their assortment of food, as well as educational exhibits and entertainment.  Don’t miss out – join the millions of people that visit New York’s county fairs every year – it is sure to be an enjoyable experience for your entire family.”

Spanning the duration of summer for the next three months, 54 county and youth fairs will open their gates to millions of people all over New York.  Last year, approximately 4 million New Yorkers visited county and youth fairs across the State.

County fairs were originally created to show off the latest developments in agriculture, as well as to provide a social gathering for the community.  Today, county fairs continue their agricultural tradition, but also provide a host of other family activities, including entertainment, talent shows, educational exhibits, carnival rides, and a variety of food.  While every fair has its own unique attractions, events such as tractor pulls and demolition derbies have become common attractions.

The Commissioner also encouraged all New Yorkers to mark their calendars for the 164th annual Great New York State Fair.  This year’s fair, themed “So much more outside your door,” will open on August 26 and run through September 6.  This annual celebration of New York agriculture, art and innovation attracts nearly 1 million people each summer. Annual highlights include the butter sculpture, a daily parade, animal shows, midway rides, incredible food, an amazing free concert series and much more. There will also be exciting new entertainment ranging from high-diving pirates and trained tigers to a reverse bungee jump. During its 12 days of operation, the Fair’s grandstand will host international music stars such as Aerosmith, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Rush and Jeff Dunham.

To find information on the county fairs in your area, visit the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ website at http://www.agriculture.ny.gov/fairshome.html.  A list of county and youth fairs scheduled for 2010 is also attached below.

Fairgoers may be interested in obtaining a Statewide Fair Pass, offered through the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs.  The Statewide Fair Pass gives unlimited admission to the ticket holder and one guest (plus parking when available) to any of the 2010 New York County Fairs, as well as the New York State Fair.  Passes are available on a first come, first served basis and cost $100.  To order a pass, visit http://www.nyfairs.org/passes.htm or call the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs, Inc. at 518-753-4956.

The oldest continuously operating fair in America is the Jefferson County Fair in Watertown, which was first organized in 1817.  The largest county fair is the Erie County Fair in Hamburg with 876,420 people attending last year.
