Commissioner Aubertine Announces Thomas Ryan to Serve as Director of the Great New York State Fair

Former Syracuse Mayor Tom Young to Serve in Capacity of Special Advisor

State Agriculture Commissioner Darrel J. Aubertine today announced the appointment of Thomas Ryan to serve as Director of the great New York State Fair.  Mr. Ryan currently serves as Chief of Staff of the New York State Thruway and Canal Corporation, managing the day to day operations of the organization.  Prior to his service at the Thruway Authority, Mr. Ryan served as Regional Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration, and Regional Administrator for the Federal Transit Administration.

Tom Young, former Syracuse Mayor and one time State Fair Director, will serve as Special Advisor to Mr. Ryan.  Tom's advice on operations, coupled with the involvement of the State Fair Advisory Board, will assist Mr. Ryan in moving the Fair toward increased efficiency, integrity and transparency.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said, “Tom Ryan has devoted three decades to public service on both the federal and state levels, and will bring to the State Fair the kind of leadership this premier event deserves.”

"The great New York State Fair is one of the premier destinations in all of New York State, attracting nearly one million visitors a year," Commissioner Aubertine said.  "Tom Ryan will help make it even better.  Tom is an idea guy, but he's also a highly competent manager with extensive public and private sector experience.  He will bring a lifetime of experience to the greatest Fair in the country."

State Fair Director Thomas Ryan said, "I look forward to working in partnership with Commissioner Aubertine and Tom Young as plans begin to move forward for the 2013 great New York State Fair.  We have a lot of ideas for 2013 and we are going to hit the ground running.  I know with this team in place, the 2013 great New York State Fair will definitely be an event worth remembering."

Greenberg, Chair of the State Fair Advisory Board, said, "The State Fair Advisory Board looks forward to working closely with Tom Ryan and Tom Young.  The Fair is an incomparable late summer attraction, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.  It is a great tradition, which I am confident Tom Ryan will build on and enhance in the years to come."
Mr. Ryan's state government service includes time spent as Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, Director of Communications & Intergovernmental Relations at the New York State Department of Transportation, and Assistant Secretary to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo, where he directed scheduling and advance.  He also served as Director of Intergovernmental Relations and Special Assistant to Governor Mario M. Cuomo.

Mr. Ryan also served under the guidance of the late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, where he was the Senator's Director of statewide operations and staff coordinator.  His career in public service began as Regional Director for 34 Upstate Counties, where he provided local government liaison and constituent service with federal agencies.  A newspaperman by trade, Mr. Ryan was once the City Editor for the Plattsburgh Press Republican.

Mr. Ryan attended Dutchess Community College and The New School in New York City.  He is a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Waterford Maritime Historical Society; a Founding Director of the Canal New York Business and Marketing Alliance.  He is a winner of the "Spirit of the Canal Award" from the New York State Canal Conference; Leadership Award, US Marshals Service, Eastern District of New York; a former member, Board of Directors, Canal Society of New York State; and former Chairman, Board of Directors, Community Kids TLC Day Care Center.

He was also the President of the State Council on Waterways, a statewide nonprofit educational and tourism promotion organization dedicated to marketing and promoting the New York State Canal System and increasing public access to the waterway in several underserved areas across the state.

The primary purpose of the New York State Fair is to conduct an annual celebration of the economic, cultural and institutional strengths indigenous to New York with a special emphasis on agriculture as one of the State's largest and most important industries. Along with twelve days of expositions, the Fair offers various forms of affordable entertainment and amusement for families and friends, and showcases the talents, skills and aspiration of our youth.

Mr. Ryan is the father of children Michael and Kathleen.  He currently resides in Little Falls and intends to relocate to Syracuse.
