Record Number of Home Brewers Put Their Best to the State Fair Test
Surge of Competition Entries Helped by Partnership with F. X. Matt Brewing Co.
Home beermakers have entered this year’s New York State Fair Home Brew competition in record numbers, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Darrel J. Aubertine announced.
They’re taking advantage of an amazing opportunity to have their recipe brewed in a professional brewery and entered in a national competition.
For this year’s competition, 140 exhibitors have submitted 407 different homebrewed beers. That’s up from 74 exhibitors and 267 entries last year. Judging, under the auspices (and palates) of the Salt City Brew Club, takes place at the Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday.
Two bottles of the winning beer, and the beer’s recipe, will be taken to the F. X. Matt Brewing Company in Utica. There, the beer will be analyzed and, with the winning brewer on hand, the recipe will be brewed in F. X. Matt’s new state-of-the-art pilot brewing lab. (The recipe may be modified to be able to be brewed in a commercial facility.) The resulting beer will be bottled and entered in the ProAm Competition in the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado.
“This partnership with F. X. Matt Brewing Co. grew out of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s ‘Wine, Beer and Spirits Summit’ earlier this year. The growth in entries speaks for itself, and we are excited to help facilitate the continued growth of the brewing industry in New York State,” said Aubertine.
“We are just thrilled to see a record amount of entries for this competition,” said Nick Matt, chairman and CEO of F.X. Matt Brewing Company. “We’re really looking forward to brewing with the winner,” said Rich Michaels, product development manager at F.X. Matt Brewing Company. “I started out brewing at home over 20 years ago and this brew will be an opportunity to revisit my homebrewing days. It’s also a great opportunity for a New York homebrewer to compete on a national level in Denver.”
The Fair conducts approximately 50 competitions, of which the Home Brew event is the first to be judged. The competitions range from art to agriculture to classic cars. Details on the various competitions can be found on the Fair’s competitions website at nysfair.org/competitions.
The New York State Fair runs from August 22 – September 2, 2013. The Fair’s theme is “Sharing the Bounty and Pride of New York.”
In addition to the annual New York State Fair, the Fairgrounds host dozens of agricultural events throughout the year, including some of the Northeast’s most prestigious horse and livestock shows.
The home of the Great New York State Fair is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available on the Fair’s website.
