John Kay & Steppenwolf Will Take Chevy Court on a ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ at the 2014 Great New York State Fair

First Slate of Acts Announced for Free Chevy Court Concerts

John Kay & Steppenwolf, the band that first made popular the term ‘heavy metal,’ will perform at Chevy Court during the 2014 Great New York State Fair at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, Acting New York State Commissioner of Agriculture Richard A. Ball announced today.

Founding member Kay, who lived for a time in Buffalo before moving to California and forming what would become Steppenwolf, has been the band’s leader since its first days in 1967.  It’s his voice that blasted from the radio on signature hits “Born To Be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride.”  Both singles remain staples of classic rock radio and continue to be heavily identified with riding motorcycles on the open road because of their appearance on the soundtrack for the classic film, “Easy Rider.”

“This is the first of many announcements of top-quality performances for the Chevy Court stage.  I encourage everyone to circle these dates on your calendar and visit the Great New York State Fair for great food, music, entertainment, and the best of New York State agriculture,” said Acting Commissioner Ball.

Concerts on Chevy Court are free with your admission to the Fair.  This performance takes place on one of two Senior Days, where admission is free for senior citizens.  Performances on Chevy Court are presented by Chevrolet.

Also scheduled to appear at Chevy Court are:

  • Bowzer’s Rock & Roll Party, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26.  Jon “Bowzer” Bauman, of 60’s doo-wop revival group “Sha Na Na,” brings back one of the most-requested shows by Fairgoers.  His appearance is on one of two Senior Days, which feature free attendance for senior citizens.
  • Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29.  Southside Johnny Lyon’s band and horn section has been blending rock and blues with a Jersey Shore twist for four decades.

The Fair has already announced the first of its slate of concerts for the Grandstand as well.  Limited tickets remain available for the performance Saturday, August 30 by Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, and Tyler Farr.  Tickets are available from the Fair’s only official online ticket agent,
