Records Set during Dollar Day at the 2014 Great New York State Fair

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball and Acting State Fair Director Troy Waffner today highlighted a number of unprecedented figures from the record-breaking Dollar Day at the Great New York State Fair, which took place on Labor Day, September 1, 2014.  The State Fair broke two single day attendance records during the 2014 event, the first on Saturday, August 30 with 120,617 fairgoers coming through the gates.  That record was broken two days later thanks to the first ever “Dollar Day” at the Fair, which brought another 122,870 through the gates. Admission to the Fair was $1 per person on Labor Day, as were all individual rides on the Wade Shows Midway.  A number of vendors also participated in separate Dollar Day promotions.

Total attendance for the Fair was 965,147 in 2014, up 113,990 from 2013.

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “If this year’s Great New York State Fair proved one thing, it’s that agriculture indeed sells.  Dollar Day brought a record number of people into the gates and as a result thousands upon thousands of people learned more about New York’s outstanding agricultural sector.  This was a great team effort that I was extremely proud to be a part of this year.”

Acting State Fair Director Troy Waffner said, “The gates to the Fair opened promptly at 9 a.m. on September 1 and hordes of fairgoers poured in at a level that I have never seen before.  People were very excited about Dollar Day and it showed.  Dollar Day was an idea brought to us by the team at Wade Shows.  We immediately embraced it and the results speak for themselves.  I’d like to particularly thank our partners in public safety as well as the team at Centro for their help in making Dollar Day a success.”

Highlights of this extraordinary day in Central New York include:

  • Total Labor Day admissions climbed from 60,891 in 2013 to 122,870 in 2014, a 102 percent increase and an all-time record.
  • Employing its own Dollar Day promotion where all rides were just $1, the Wade Shows Midway on-site gross sales set a single day record at the Great New York State Fair, generating $223,360 on Labor Day 2014, compared to $96,384 on Labor Day the previous year, a 132 percent increase.
  • Same-day Labor Day general admission sales soared from 5,705 in 2013 to 53,349 in 2014, an 835 percent increase.
  • The number of cars parked in Fair-operated parking lots increased from 10,882 on Labor Day 2013 to 23,421 on Labor Day 2014, a 115 percent increase.
The Great New York State Fair is operated by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and showcases the best of New York agriculture while providing top-quality entertainment. This year’s tagline, “New Attractions, Old Favorites, Timeless Fun," highlighted the more than two dozen new events and attractions and the expansion or enhancement of several Fairgoer favorites. The home of the Great New York State Fair is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available on the Fair’s website.
