Sea Lions to Return to the 2015 Great New York State Fairís Entertainment Lineup

New This Year: Rexie The T-Rex, One of Many Chances to Interact, Take Pictures With Characters

The Great New York State Fair’s grounds entertainment lineup will once again include live sea lions, as the popular Sea Lion Splash returns to the Fair after a year’s absence, Acting Director Troy Waffner announced today.

Sea Lion Splash is the nation’s only traveling sea lion exhibit, highlighting sea lions from California and South America.  It began as an effort by one man to adopt sea lions unable to survive in the wild due to injury, illness, or age.  Now, his exhibit delights people as the sea creatures perform educational and entertaining tricks while carrying messages about recycling and coexisting with nature.

“The sea lions’ schedule kept them on the West Coast during the 2014 Fair. We made it a priority to get them here for 2015 because we know how much people look forward to seeing them every year.  We missed them, too, and we look forward to seeing all of the new pictures people take of themselves with these beautiful and gentle animals,” said Waffner.

In place of the sea lion exhibit last year, the Fair brought in Wolves of the World, an exhibit that proved every bit as popular and fascinating.  Large crowds greeted each show, which highlighted the ways in which wolves live, showcased their physical skills, and gave some fairgoers a chance to pet young wolves.  Wolves of the World, the nation’s only traveling wolf pack, will return in 2015.

New for 2015, young fairgoers will enjoy meeting Rexie The T-Rex.  Rexie joins the Fair’s list of roving characters.  The puppet is eight feet tall and 12 feet long, and is led from place to place by a “handler.”  Rexie is said to be realistic and gentle, and perfect for taking a one-of-a-kind selfie.

The New York State Fair, operated by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, runs from August 27 Ė September 7, 2015.  The Fair’s mission, reflected in its theme, “Summer’s Best in Show,” is to showcase the best of New York agriculture while providing top-quality entertainment.

In addition to the annual New York State Fair, the Fairgrounds host dozens of agricultural events throughout the year, including some of the Northeast’s most prestigious horse and livestock shows.

The home of the Great New York State Fair is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available on the Fair’s website.  Find The Great New York State Fair on Facebook, follow @NYSFair on Twitter, and enjoy photos from the Fair at Flickr.com/photos/nysfair.
