Great New York State Fair Celebrates the Solar Eclipse with a Special Ticket Sale

Admission Tickets for $3 – the Price of Tickets in 1979 –During the Eclipse

In 1979, Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” dominated the pop charts, while “Kramer vs. Kramer” was the box office champ.  President Carter opened relations with China and McDonald’s debuted the Happy Meal.  At the Great New York State Fair, the Anheuser Busch Clydesdales drew big crowds and a local TV station hosted tryouts for the disco-dance TV show “Dance Fever.”  1979 was the last time a total solar eclipse passed over the continental United States.

In honor of the return of the total eclipse, the Great New York State Fair will hold a very special Solar Eclipse Sale of admission tickets.  During the eclipse, starting at 1:15 pm Monday, tickets good for admission on any day will go on sale for $3 – the price of admission in 1979.  Only 1,979 tickets will be available and the sale will end at 3:45 pm, about the time the eclipse is ending. These tickets are only available online via the Fair’s official online ticket seller, Etix, at https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/4423408. A credit card charge will be added to the cost of online purchases, along with a fee of 12 cents per ticket purchased.  Limit 2 tickets per person.  Children 12 and under are admitted free every day.

State Fair Acting Director Troy Waffner said, “Maybe we’ve been out in the sun a little too long this week, but we thought it would be a great idea to roll back admission prices to what they were during the last total solar eclipse.  If you’ve already bought tickets, here’s a low-cost way to book a return trip.”

The New York State Fair, operated by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, runs from August 23 to September 4, 2017. The Fair's mission, reflected in its theme, "FIND YOUR GREAT," is to showcase the best of New York agriculture while providing top-quality entertainment.

The home of the Great New York State Fair is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available on the Fair’s website.
